Hadith / حديث

Daughter of a Prophet, Uncle was a Prophet, Married to a Prophet

This phrase “You are the daughter of a prophet, your uncle was a prophet and you are (married) with a prophet” was said by the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) to his wife Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab (رضي الله عنها).

The hadeeth is as follows:

“Safiyyah (رضي الله عنها) learned that Hafsah (رضي الله عنها) said regarding her, ‘Verily, you are a daughter of a Jew!’ so she wept.

The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) entered upon her and she was weeping so he said, ‘What happened?!’

She said, ‘Hafsah said regarding me, ‘Verily, you are a daughter of a Jew!’’

So, the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said to her, ‘You are the daughter of a prophet, your uncle was a prophet and you are (married) with a prophet. So for what was she boasting over you?’

Then he (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said, ‘Have taqwa of Allaah (Fear Allaah) O’ Hafsah’

[This hadeeth is authentic. It has been determined to be authentic by Shaykh al-Albaani (رحمه الله تعالى) in Saheeh wa Da’eef Sunan al-Tirmidhi (3894) and al-Mishkaat (6183).]

In the explanation to this Hadeeth, it is mentioned in “Tuhfatul ‘Ahwadhee”:

(You are the daughter of a Prophet) refers to Haroon bin Imran (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ), (Your Uncle was a Prophet) refers to Musa bin Imran (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ), (You are married to a Prophet) refers to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) now.

[Source: Tuhfatul ‘Ahwadhee, (10/268)]

Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab (رضي الله عنها)’s father Huyayy ibn Akhtab was a Jew and he died in that state in a battle and this is why she was referred to as the daughter of a Jew by Hafsah bint ‘Umar (رضي الله عنها).

Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab (رضي الله عنها) was a descendant of Prophet Haroon (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ), and this is why the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) consoled her by saying that she was the daughter of a Prophet (referring to Prophet Haroon (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ)). And in this context only the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said that her Uncle was a Prophet (referring to Prophet Musa (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ)).

This hadeeth shows how the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) made her think positively to a negative remark.

And the last statement of the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) “Fear Allaah O Hafsa” signifies the severity of making such remarks about others which would hurt them.
