Imam al-Shafi’i: My Soul Yearns for Egypt

On 28, Dec 2012 | In Arabic / العربية, Imam Ash-Shafi'i (رحمه الله), Poetry | By Abu 'Aaminah

Some selections from the Diwan of Imam al-Shafi’i:

If you are caught in confusion between two matters,
And you don’t know what is right and what is wrong.
At that point, disobey your desires; for indeed desires,
Only lead the soul to what is blameworthy and wrong.

“Even if we disagreed..”

Younus Al-Sadafi said:

I have not seen anyone wiser than Al-Shafi’ee. I debated with him one day on an issue and we disagreed. When we met again, he took my hand, and said: ‘O, Abu Moosa, would it not be correct that we remain brothers even if we disagreed on an issue?’

Importance of a Teacher

Imām ash-Shāfi’ī رحمه الله said:

“Whomever learns from books (without a teacher) will destroy (misunderstand) the ahkām (rulings) and whomever takes his books as his shaykh, his mistakes will outnumber his understanding (what he comprehends).”

“For the one who gives up arguing…”

Abu Umamah al-Bahili رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

I am the leader of a house in Paradise. I guarantee a house in Jannah for one who gives up arguing, even if he is in the right; and I guarantee a home in the middle of Jannah for one who abandons lying even if he is joking; and I guarantee a house in the highest part of Jannah for one who has good manners.”
